4/20 Fun: Where to Eat, Play + Party on Mary Jane's First Fully Legal Holiday

By

For smokers, the holiday was already akin to a sacred celebration. But now that cannabis is legal for everyone 21 and up throughout the state, 4/20 promises to be big this year. (Just imagine if there were a holiday for drinking. Oh wait...)

If you're new to 4/20 festivities, there are plenty of cool options going down in the Bay Area—from your classic festival in the park to lots of ways to sate the munchies. Not your first rodeo? A new era of cannabis promises interesting new ways to celebrate, from a private concert to a 10-course meal. Have fun!

The Big Dispensary Sale

If you're planning a full day of festivities, you'll need to stock up first. The Apothecarium's three locations will be slangin' specials all day with discounts up to 50 percent off. The Castro address promises to be a real drag—the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be in the house, with a photo booth to boot. The first 100 guests at each store will receive a free goodie bag. The Castro and Marina locations open at 9am; SoMa gets going at 10. // apothecarium.com

The Private Concert

Remember when 4/20 was just about getting baked in the park? The team at Sava, known for their elevated curation of cannabis products geared toward women and wellness, is ushering in the new age of cannabis with style. On the evening of April 20th, Sava will host Birth of a New Era, an intimate musical performance by cellist Joshua McClain, who will play a blend of orchestral, rock, and Americana genres inside a private residence in San Francisco (the address will be announced to attendees the morning of the event). In addition to the cozy concert, guests will also be gifted a sweet selection of cannabis goodies. // 7-10:30pm; tickets ($33) are available at getsava.com.

The Munchie Feast

If the idea of eating yourself silly when the munchies hit is your idea of a good time, then chef David Murphy's 10-course dinner party is your dream com true. The chef behind Whitechapel is cooking up a pop-up feast for serious foodie-stoners, with dishes including 12-foot chicken sandwich and butter chicken and paneer nachos. Health food junkies and people with dietary restriction need not apply. // 7-10pm at New Village Cafe, 1426 Polk St. (Nob Hill); tickets ($100) are available at Eventbrite.

The DJ Par-Tay

Lovers of Bay Area-bred music will want to be at Andre Nickatina's all-day 420 Bash, with DJ J. Espinosa and performances by Anonymous That Dude, Nump, and Fos. There will be giveaways, surprise guests, and lots of vendors on site to sate all your 4/20 needs. Plus, if you arrive before 4:20pm, you can get in for free and party all night. // 3pm to 2am at The EndUp, 401 6th St. (SoMa); tickets ($10 daytime early bird, $20 pre-sale GA) are available at Eventbrite.

The Festival

Hippie Hill? Been there, done that. This year, to celebrate cannabis' first year in the fully legal limelight, head over to Dolores Park for the first annual 420 Fest SF. Like usual, you can bring a blanket and some snacks and kick back for what's being touted as a "mini Burning Man"—think live art, bong relay races, pop-up yoga, talks, and an edibles bar. // 3pm to 1am, Mission Dolores Park; for more info, go to 420festsf.com.

The Snack Attack

When the cravings kick in, stop by food truck paradise Spark Social SF for a selection of $4.20 food and drinks including Thai and Korean tacos, samosas, spicy grilled cheese, dessert empanadas, and beer and sangria. // 11am to 9pm, Spark, 601 Mission Bay Blvd N. (Mission Bay); for more info, go to facebook.com.

The Day of Service

For a totally different take on 4/20, volunteer with The Hood Incubator at this community event—hosted by Harborside, Eaze, and Magnolia Oakland—that aims to deliver food and hygiene kits to at least 420 people living in encampments. It's an all-ages, family-friendly day and is over early enough in the afternoon that you can still make plans to get toasted later in the day without missing a beat. Just meet in Oakland in the morning and make your way around The Town. // 10am to 2pm, City Slicker Farms, 2847 Peralta St. (Oakland); for more info at facebook.com.

The Farmer Meet-Up

Just like food, cannabis has a provenance, and growing methods matter. If you're interested in knowing where your weed comes from, swing by one of Flow Kana's Meet Your Farmer events at dispensaries around the Bay Area, including The Apothecarium (Upper Market) and Urban Pharm (SoMa) in SF, and at BPG in Berkeley. // For a full list of participating stores, go to events.flowkana.com/420.
