The abandoned grain silos of Pier 90/92 on the shore of Islais Creek in Bayview are now the scene of a massive public art project.
Long used as a graffiti canvas, the towers will be beautified with a huge multi-dimensional mural designed by artists Laura Hadadd and Tom Drugan. The gateway into Bayview and Hunters Point will intertwine iconic imagery that manifests the neighborhood’s changing economy, ecology, and community. The illuminating patterns reveal a heron rising from the water, native cherry plants, and other abstract shapes. The long-term temporary installation (expected to be in a place for a minimum of 5 years) will be visible and changing from day to night.
The silos, built in 1918, were formerly used to store grain that arrived by way of railroad and was subsequently loaded onto cargo ships for export. The purpose was discontinued after the 1989 earthquake.
