Bardessono

Bardessono executive chef Sean O'Toole makes a bold statement—all hams are not created equal. And to back up his statement, he's presenting a tasting of the best. Sample three distinct varieties of jamón ibérico and learn the story behind this centuries-old curing practice. You'll experience a four-course Spanish dinner paired with select Spanish wines. Space is limited, so start planning your "sick" day now.

Love him or hate him, wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. has made and broken many a winemaker. On Oct. 22, feel the power as he leads a tasting of the 2007 Châteuneuf-du-Pape at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. A sparkling wine reception follows (as it should when you’re shelling out $750). 2555 Main St., St. Helena, 707-967-2305, ciachef.edu

Here's another excuse to get out of San Francisco—and a good one at that: the heirloom BLT bar and 2008 Sauvignon Blanc release party at Bardessono in Yountville. Imagine this: 40 varieties of tomatoes, 10 types of heirloom basil, 15 varied sea salts from around the world, fresh mozzarella, wood-fired bread and, oh yeah, a bacon bar.

With a cheap wine list and comfort food, Bottega is bringing them in.

Spent the weekend up doing the Yountville shuffle. Here's my blog brief.

Yountville might feel like a planned community (of restaurants and resorts) rather than real place where real people live and dine (and get spa treatments). But it doesn't seem to detract from its ability to continue to be the big destination in the Napa Valley. (Thanks, French Laundry.)
