The Well-Rounded Woman: Rupa Marya, Lead singer-guitarist, Rupa & the April Fishes

Rupa Marya leads something of a double life; when she’s not tending to patients as a resident physician at UCSF, she’s selling out local clubs and touring the world with her band Rupa & the April Fishes. The Fishes have a busy summer planned: After an American and European tour, they return home to release their sophomore album, Este Mundo, in October. If their debut effort, last year’s Extraordinary Rendition, with its Gypsy-Latin-Euro grooves, is any indication, we have lots to look forward to. Check them out June 5 at Ashkenaz in Berkeley for a preview.

“I cherish my jam sessions with Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney—this local SF phenomenon will create the most beautiful layers of music with his voice, a banjo, whatever’s handy and a loop machine. He makes me remember the word play, as in, ‘I play music.’

“I can’t get enough of the organ at the Castro Theatre. For more than 25 years, the amazing David Hegarty has been playing for 15 minutes before the film starts, every single night.” 429 Castro St., 415-621-6120, castrotheatre.com

Radio Habana Social Club has got the best sangria in SF. It’s where I catch up on the scene when we’ve been on road for a few months. I fill up on Victor and Leila’s hospitality, some really good empanadas and a simple plate of beans and rice.” 1109 Valencia St., 415-824-7659

ATA (Artists’ Television Access) always provides a creative wake-up call. You might see an exhibition, watch a great new documentary or hear some amazing music.” 992 Valencia St., 415-824-3890, atasite.org

“Kite flying at sunset on Ocean Beach keeps everything in perspective. It’s always surprising to me that we live on the ocean and yet the place is never crowded.”
