Love Letters to Dogpatch

This neighborhood used to be one of the last bastions of affordability in the city, with tidy Victorians hidden amidst industrial lofts that once housed meat-packing factories. Now chocolate makers, caterers, artists and pizzerias have colonized this ’hood, which Men’s Journal just named one of America’s best. True? False? Tell us what this place is really all about.
Submit up to a 300-word “love letter” to Dogpatch in the comment box below. We'll publish the 10 best neighborhood letters in our upcoming Neighborhoods Issue and pick one to win Outside Lands tickets.

My darling, my patch, I’m just trying to keep up. Some kind of strange buzz is brewing. Surprising, isn’t it? With all of your gritty charm, this tenacious coast of Potrero curves; you’ve got more character but a less graceful view. I like you best at night (like most lovers, I suppose: with a bottle of wine and high spirits), with your low-hanging clouds that reflect all the lights of the Bay Bridge and production of the ports, you cast a bright orange glow that feels as antiquated as it does soothing. And in the daytime it’s as though the entire breath of the City is coughing into the streets, and you whistle back like a troubadour - kissing & slapping my ancient shutters. In this resilient airstream bouncing off abandoned ports, my love echoes quiet to the revving of motorcycles. You have had many lovers, and lasting ones, mostly because they have resided with you ceaselessly through the long serpentine path of your history. The forgotten maritime corner: you are the warehouse to the pristine showroom of San Francisco. Suddenly, this once refuge for the strays has become a tiny asylum for the metropolis. You’re humble industriousness have become the stuff of admiration rather than the relics of time and forsaken iron works, sugar refineries, and shipyards. You charisma is palpable for so small a place. Look at what’s happening: start-ups and gourmet dining, studios and lofts. Get ready. You’re bringing the cool like you once brought the dogs – all nibbling around for something interesting. Let’s show them.
With you always in the streets named for the battleships built here – all christened with names of States… as if there were any other better Union than this to sail to. ~ Tiffany
