Love Letters to Lower Pac Heights

If we were giving awards to neighborhoods, Lower Pac Heights would win most improved. In the last few years, Fillmore Street has played host to a handful of great restaurants (SPQR and a second coming for both Dosa and Pizzeria Delfina among them) and gotten itself a fancy new movie theatre.
Share what you adore about where you live. Submit a “love letter” to Lower Pac Heights below for a chance to be published in the Neighborhoods section of an upcoming issue.

My dear Lower Pacific Heights,
There was a day, a few years ago, where we thought the bloom was off our rose...We barely tolerated one another each time I passed moody Esmeralda's ever-smelly shopping cart on the streets around Fillmore. We fought hysterically when Goodwill disappeared from Post and Fillmore. We stopped speaking for weeks after several distressing experiences on the 24 Divisadero bus. I feared we would soon part ways for good.
But, alas, after fourteen years in your embrace, love doesn't just slip off into a Dogpatch. My rent control apartment in a stunning though frayed Edwardian with instant access to some of the best restaurants and cafes in the city is a relationship worth keeping and appreciating. Chocolate croissants from Boulangerie followed by book canoodling at Browser Books and olive oil tasting at O & Co. will continue to be our favorite afternoon date. Remember our first sloppy date? We hopped amongst the Divisadero bars from Solstice to Lion's Den to Frankie's and others whose names escape me now that I'm humble about our love.
Okay, sure, we've struggled at times, but after fourteen years, we're stronger than ever even with so many others having discovered your delights. Let's go sit high atop the steps at Alta Plaza Park and appreciate the panoramic delights of our existence. Let's stay together...forever...luv, B

oh lower pacific heights, i didn't choose you on my own. i fell in love with one of your denizens and found myself living in his, now our, apartment. i left the leave-it-to-beaver presidio for you! our block is gritty-broken car windows, the occasional person peeing on the tree outside the building, sirens-but i've grown to love its bumps and bruises as my own. i can walk everywhere. everywhere! if i need my hair-did, or a skirt altered, or a 40 of olde english, or a psychic reading, or a view of a giant buddha planter, i can get all of that within 20 steps of my front door. our place is the perfect meetup spot before shows at the fillmore. i've even grown to have affection for the homeless guy in the ski-mask who wears headphones that aren't connected to anything who rifles through our recycling. he waves at me as i eat my cereal. i sometimes can imagine that I'm the only white chick with a little dog for miles, and that's pretty rad.
lower pacific heights, you give me little star, the independent, dosa, bay breads, so many good stories, and the not-so-safeway. this girl wouldn't have it any other way.

Dear Lower Pacific Heights,
I was reluctant to move within you, after living in SOMA and the Mission where both locations were full of diversity and everything I could imagine was at my fingertips. I was scared I would end up driving everywhere and lose my ability to walk to destinations in the vast blocks of wealthy white people. After all, they don’t call is Specific Whites for nothing, right? Well it is partly true but I did come to appreciate what you have to offer within your streets and how convenient it is to get around the city through your transportation corridors.
Since eating is what I probably do best, Lower Pacific Heights is a perfect spot to fulfill my appetite by either strolling down to Divasdero for tacos at Tortilla Heights, small plates at Solstice or a freshly made cocktail at The Lion’s Den. For a larger selection, I could go towards Fillmore and could walk up and down for hours trying to decide which place to eat at. With all the new restaurants such as Dosa, Pizzeria Delfina, SPQR and not to mention the anticipation of the new Out the Door on Bush Street.
I also love that I do not have to travel far when in need of groceries, gifts or a quick new outfit after rummaging through the closet only to come up with nothing to wear. Marc, by Marc Jacobs, Betsy Johnson, Ralph Lauren, that hat store with the Aretha Franklin hat, the pet place by Curbside, Papyrus for cards, a quick yoga fix on Divisadero or some custom clothes for my nephews next door. There is something for everyone.
I must admit that I have grown to appreciate all you have to offer and do notice the people from all walks of life living within your streets.
Regards,
dfro

What’s not to like about Pac Heights? One of the sunnier neighborhoods of the city, its close proximity to musical venue The Independent, also home to Monday movie nights and Indie Mart, is rad. Neighborhood bar, The Lion's Den serves literally the best fresh-fruit cocktails in the city; Greyhound anyone? Pizzeria Delfina, our neighborhood pizzeria, is on it’s own enough to please even the most finicky of diners, yet Pac Heights gives more. Recently opened, Woodhouse Fish Company, home of $1 dollar oyster Tuesdays. Tataki Sushi serves only sustainably farmed fish, making it both delicious and socially conscious. One of only two Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s in the city is right here. D&M Wines and Liquors, with their weekly sales make stocking the liquor cabinet with quality booze a breeze. Alta Vista Park’s hillsides are a great place for a picnic of chicken tacos from El Burrito Express, or a freshly made sandwich from Blue Fog Market on California. Great boutique shopping also found here. On Fillmore, Calvin Tran’s collection features pieces that are made to wear different ways, which the knowledgeable, friendly staff will happily demonstrate for, or on you. Heidi Says Shoes stocks stilettos Carrie Bradshaw would stand behind, and for you label whores Marc by Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, and Ralph Lauren are all within five blocks. Sacramento Street hosts Vintage a la Mode for those inspired by the ghost of trends past. And, in case you’ve been inspired to move here design stores Anthem, Zinc Details and Timeless Treasures will have your floors and walls covered, helping you reflect design expertise, whether you’re post-modern, country chic, or restored vintage. The best thing about Pac Heights is unlike other nearby neighborhoods, (cough Marina) its denizens are refined and stylish without being snobby or acting unabashedly, entitled.
