As a child, when I thought of you, I thought of the Shriner's Hospital and fog and Ocean Beach and fog and the N Judah and fog and Stern Grove and fog, fog, fog. Little did I know that, as an adult, I would live in your cocoon of cool fog.
I walk your streets, soaking in your cool mists, basking in the overheard French of the children at the Lycée Français La Pérouse. I soak in your vistas, whether it’s from the top of Turtle Hill or the benches at the edge of Sunset Reservoir, looking out at Ocean Beach and the seemingly endless sea. I cherish those sun-soaked Octobers and Januarys that are our due for suffering the June Gloom and the whims of the Marine Layer in August. Even more, I cherish those rare summer days where the sun doesn’t get the memo and makes an appearance, causing Sunseters to strip practically to the bone and soak in the rarified rays.
I almost always end my walk at Henry’s House of Coffee on Noriega near 23rd, past the smell of Dim Sum and Hawaiian BBQ and into the smell of Henry’s amazing coffee. The scene at Henry’s is what I love of the Sunset all at once, the smell of Coffee roasted and brewed, the sound of Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, a smattering of Armenian and French and Irish brogues coming from here and there. Also, there is the sound of American accents from everywhere; in short, the sound of San Francisco.
This is my Sunset, the only place in this city, The City, that I want to be. I can get to those other neighborhoods easily enough from the Sunset, but the Sunset is where I want to live. And I as I walk her streets, hoping for the occasional glimpse of the Farallons at sunset, my heart expands to take all of you in, my Sunset.

Dearest Sunset,
We have been together for quite some time. You must know by now my love for you is not inspired by convenience(HA!) or you sunny disposition(double HA!). My love for you is inspired by the smell of the fog after rain, a combination of salt and seaweed. It feels as though the whole entire world is under water. My love for you, Sunset, is fed by delicious tacos (Underdog Sports Bar/Nick's Crispy Tacos), gut busting pizza (The Pizza Place),fresh falafel (Sunrise Deli) triple iced lattes (Henry's House of Coffee) and butterscotch ice cream rootbeer floats (Pollyanne's Ice Cream Shop).
Your endless and monotonous facade is just that, a facade. Behind the doors of the identical pink, tourquoise, and pale yellow stucco houses live artists, multi-generational families, surfers, musicians, chefs and hot rod mechanics. Walking through your foggy streets my senses are overwhelmed by the smell of wet dogs, pan fried noodles, corned beef and cabbage, miso soup, motor oil, or plain old back yard BBQ. My ears catch snippets of garage bands, a backyard screening of "Mary Poppins", and the long board's wheels carving out a perfect ride down Moraga. My eyes, even after all these years, well up with joy at the part of you where the streetlights end and the ocean starts.
My favorite place to be with you is on Turtle Hill. I love to climb those beautiful tiled stairs to the very top. This is where I can really take you all in. From Turtle Hill, I can see my house, and my old house. I can see the street that shares your beautiful name, a green belt down your ample middle. From here I can see just where the land meets the sea. Best of all is the view of the sunset. From here the sunset sparkles off of the ocean, the park, the widmills,and the rooftops. It is breath taking.

Dear Outer Sunset,
As a young child with a fresh and precious life I would crawl through your dingy streets, hazel eyes wide with wonder-from the beginning I felt the spark. I was swept away by your beauty, enchanted by the turbulence of your ocean and the cruelty of the wind and the salt and the sand that haunted your boulevards like a secret past. I was enamored by the mystery of your clumsy foreign markets and the loud, lethargic trek of the Muni train. I understood and was quickly addicted to your wicked beauty from the start.
Am I no longer the child I was when we first met? Years later, your obscure sea-side streets are now the ones I call my own. There is something real between us that I am unable to define; you have managed to fill all my empty spaces with something warm and true. You have gifted me with sunsets ignited with hues so pure I can see my future. You have given me tranquil evenings in the dying sunlight on my deck next to the ocean, permitting me to become intricately intertwined and simultaneously detached from my universe. In these moments, Outer Sunset, I feel the peace. My heart, it writhes for you.
Outer Sunset, I wonder what benevolence I have bestowed on this universe that has graced me with the opportunity to belong to you, and you to belong to me? I have found myself in your foggy streets. You are nowhere near perfect but I am no longer afraid of your dark parts and you possess something that I love indisputably. I will forgive anything. I will cling to you long after it is time to let you.

Veiled in a blanket of fog, and comparatively peaceful to the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco’s downtown neighborhood’s, the Outer Sunset is a solace for urban dwellers who desire a space to run, swim, surf and breathe without losing the metropolitan vibe of the city. Originally inhabited by mostly Irish and Asian immigrants, the neighborhood’s past lives on in the plethora of Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese eateries and various Hibernian haunts that dot the streets of Taraval, Noriega and Judah. Today’s Outer Sunset dwellers are a mix of families, students, surfers, dog lovers and other outdoor adventurers types who enjoy the beach and the fresh ocean air of the misty avenues.
While typical San Francisco tourists may shy away from neighborhood’s perky rows of pastel-colored houses, this neighborhood is not you’re typical Pleasantville. There’s a treasure trove of sights, smells and food hidden among these quiet avenues. While I tend to enjoy busy streets of the Mission, or the crowds of Union Square and North Beach, I’ve slowly come to appreciate the simple pleasures that have made the Outer Sunset my home. A brisk jog along the Great Highway, or shopping trip for fresh produce at the markets on Noriega or Taraval is one of my favorite ways to relax after hectic day. I’ve also recently become a regular at the newest edition of Java Beach-it’s hard to study while I’m eavesdropping on the café’s cast of characters and regulars who chat about everything from the weather to the last night’s adventures at the Riptide. I may however, start making my caffeine pilgrimage to Taraval’s latest coffee incarnation, Mocha 101. Yelpers began raving about this place within days of its grand opening, praising its delectable crepes and gossiping about the possibilities of a menu that will offer Burmese noodle dishes. Exotic food and espresso? Count me in.
I’ve also found a way to satisfy my burrito cravings without trekking to the Mission. La Playa Taqueria’s perfectly portioned veggie burritos save me the BART ticket and the stomachache from a monster meal at El Farolito. And when my housemate and I need to blow off some steam without breaking the bank, the Riptide always meets the mark. Only a few steps from our humble abode, you can usually find us there on Thursday nights, collecting our “Ladies Night” shot at midnight and splurging on the pints of Heffenwiesen.
It may not have the charm of Noe Valley, or the nightlife of the Mission, but high pitch brrring-ing of the L train and the breathtaking views of the ocean from the top of Taraval street is what makes this chilly ‘hood my home.
