We Were Promised Jetpacks

After somewhat quick and early success, these Glasgow-by-way-of-Edinburgh youngsters hopped on tour with (now labelmates) Frightened Rabbit last fall. Adam Thompson (singer/guitarist), Sean Smith (bass), Michael Palmer (guitar), and drummer Darren Lackie, all 22, gained fast fame across the world for a three-song demo, so when These Four Walls was finally released on FatCat Records, it was obviously met with critical acclaim.

Slim's Huge Night

$15-$41.95

Slim's hosts its 13th Annual One Night Stand. Notable favorites and discoverable locals will all gather under one roof for a night of mayhem, though we're not too sure how wild you can get in a crowd of age 6 and up. Our advice: Watch your drink the entire night.

If hip hop and avant rock are your scene, Prefuse 73 is your man. In the past year, he's been asked to remix for TV on the Radio, BLK JKS, Cornelius, Pelican and more. Tune in for a unique blend of prog-rock, “machine funk” and global psychedelia. Gaslamp Killer and VoicesVoices will open.

Who says you can't have it all? Parachute mixes high energy rock with a little bit of soul, R&B and pop, blending musical genres in a fine balance. Citing such diverse influences as Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Journey, Coldplay, Jay-Z and John Mayer, the band's debut album Losing Sleep simultaneously boisterous with songs like "The New Year" and exceptionally introspective with tracks like "She is Love." Come out and give this Charlottesville band a whirl. SafetySuit will open.

Mellow out with Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. The singer/songwriter will be playing an acoustic show at Slim's. Listen for tracks from the recently released Alter the Ending. Special guest New Found Glory will also play an acoustic set.

Fiery Furnaces.

It’s always fun to encounter Fiery Furnaces Matthew Friedberger -- the man is not only one of the most wildly prolific songwriters of his generation but he seems like a genuinely nice, intense fellow, who just happens to be overflowing with interesting ideas and projects (proof: 2009 saw the release of Fiery Furnaces’ I’m Going Away as well as two other shorter releases including Take Me Round Again, which saw FF covering itself).

There are few things in life as exhilarating as a new album by The Fiery Furnaces. Establishing themselves as one of rock music’s most consistently engaging, exciting and thought-provoking bands, The Fiery Furnaces—made up of core brother-sister duo Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger—are well-versed in creating an album that manages to balance melody, originality and a seemingly endless arsenal of instrumental ideas.

The ridiculous and unfounded war on SF's all-ages music venues continues. Threats have gotten serious. Accusations ridiculous. A litany of SF's problems (think murder and violent crime) have all been blamed on all-age venues such as Slim's, Cafe Du Nord and the Great American Music Hall. Clearly, rock, jazz, folk and bluegrass are dangerous for our youth. A vocal group of ultra-conservative neighbors have gotten their panties in a bundle and are using the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control as their a-bomb.

If you missed them opening for Moby, Justice and MGMT, now's your chance to see The Heavy on their own terms. The UK combo is bringing a blend of soul, funk, hard rock, pop and more to Slim's. Groove to the blues as you lose yourself to The House That Dirt Built.

The big buildup: The Heavy.

Funk, soul, hard rock, pop, and a downright twisted, manically twisting sense of humor are all hallmarks of the Heavy, a band that must be enjoyed live to be believed. I know ‘cause the UK combo had me -- and the Playboy bunnies -- in its sway with its fusion of old-school soul and rock ‘n’ roll aggression last year at South by Southwest’s Playboy bash, as the group opened for Moby, Justice and MGMT.
