We all know the city’s exclusively vegetarian outposts, from Café Gratitude to that venerable classic Greens. But where to find the best vegetarian dishes when immersed in a sea of meaty mains? Here are our favorites.

There are very few dishes good enough to justify an hour-long wait in the fog of the Inner Richmond. But the samusa soup at Burma Superstar, thickened with lentils and afloat with pieces of both falafels and house-made samusas, has devotees queuing up nightly. 309 Clement St., 415-387-2147, burmasuperstar.com

All of the Japanese small plates at O Izakaya lounge are perfect for sharing, but nothing strikes us as more Valentine’s Day appropriate than a plate of the duck-heart skewers, which bring new meaning to the time-honored phrase "eat your heart out."
