Café Du Nord

03/15/1010:01 am

Step into an alternate universe and brace yourself for an experiment in musical theater, funk and dirty south. Modern diva Janelle Monae will be stirring things up at Cafe Du Nord in back-to-back performances. Her debut album Metropolis has landed her right on top of the indie scene thanks to her Wonderland label co-conspirators Chuck Lightning and Nate "Rocket" Wonder. We're telling you now—this is a show you don't want to miss.

Thee Oh Sees.

Hafta love a band that pens tunes on compelling subjects ala “Graveyard Drug Party” and “Adult Acid.” And so it goes with Thee Oh Sees. They like to keep things interesting. The group headline the Stand with Haiti benefit at Cafe du Nord Tuesday, Feb.

(blog)
Felix Da Housecat

Time flies when you're having fun, and we sure must have been having a lot of it because January came and went with a blink of an eye. However, February in San Francisco is an exciting time for music lovers. Not only does it signify the beginning of festival season (Noise Pop's pre-party is on 2/18 and they're pumping music nearly every night straight through 3/1), it's also the start of big artists' West Coast legs of their tour. Yay for us! Noise Pop coverage to come, but to warm you up  here's this month's hot list.

With a plehtora of parties and concerts to raise funds for Haiti, it's hard to zero in on what events to attend. So, we decided to make it easy. Donate to the cause while you spend a fun, carefree evening at Du Nord. The Mamas & the Papas meet the B-52s in a fresh, new way with Thee Oh Sees. Bring your dancing shoes. Next up—Kelley Stoltz who you'll swear is not a one-man act as you marvel over the musician's piano rock and pop. End the night with Ty Segall's neo-psych garage.

Sound and story come together and Cafe Du Nord for one night only. Join four women from all over the world as they bring the flavors of their countries and cultures to our fair city. Ethiopian born singer Meklit Hadero enchants with her honey voice and soaring songs, Mexican chanteuse MamaCoAtl beguiles with blues boleros and funk rancheros, Jamaican born songwriter Sparlha Swa intoxicates with her hummingbird tones and Iranian-American playwright Lala Shafaghi weaves wondrous words with three theater shorts. Don't miss this.

Asobi Seksu Acoustic

(event)
$15

Hot off the plane from their UK tour with White Lies, this bourgeoning whimsical indie-pop duo is stripping down...for what one hopes to be an inspirational acoustic set. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Still relatively on the underground, the Bay Area's own Blank Tapes won't stay under the radar for long. Now's your chance to see the tasteful jam band live at Du Nord. Matt Adams is the mastermind behind the group and demands vocal harmonies amidst layers of keys in his blend of folk/pop/rock. If you're looking for a great performance on the cheap and some "I saw them first cred," pick up tickets to the show now.

Forro in the Dark + Girls

(event)
$12; Girls

It's a double-hitter at Du Nord. Girls upstairs at the Swedish American Hall and Forro in the Dark downstairs in the den. Whether you're in the mood for the stoned, sun-brushed sound of SF or feel more like a Brazilian dance party, our fave Castro music venue has you covered. It's Friday—stay for both shows and make it a late night.

Birds & Batteries

To those of you who have been keeping up on the phenomenally aggressive music scene we have here in the Bay Area, you're well acquainted with indie-pop meets country locals, Birds & Batteries. They first popped up on our radar when we featured them in our 2008 Hot 20 Under 40. Even then, we just knew they were going places.
