Thread Show: 7 Reasons to Go

(blog)

You certainly don't need a reason to go to Thread this weekend. But we'll give you seven:

Season's beatings: BAD Girls' final bout of the year.

You’re all crushed out on the tough girls with tats, roller skates and an appetite for tearing around a rink like a bat outta hell, I know you are -- I saw you sneaking into Whip It for the umpteenth time just the other day.

Is it a bird, a plane? No, wait … it's the Blue Angels. That's right, Fleet Week is back. Sidle up to a sailor as you watch the jets soar in four-plane diamond formation through the air. Then, feign interest in the parade of Navy ships and have said sailor show you the ropes on a riveting ship tour. Mark your calendars now.

SFPL Big Book Sale

Feel like your library is missing a something but aren't sure what? Head over to Fort Mason this weekend for the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library Big Book Sale and you'll probably walk out with more than you thought you were ever missing. The sale, held at the Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion, will offer over 300,000 books, CDs, DVDs, and books on tape. The festival is free and open to the public and all books are priced at $5 or less. All proceeds from the sale go to the SFPL's various community literacy programs, so your scavenging through stacks will be for a good cause. As an added bonus, the sale will also have the Beat Museum On Wheels parked outside, so if you start to get glassy-eyed from staring at spines, you can take a mini-tour of beat history.

Plenty of local fashion-philes have been overheard lamenting their West Coast tethers in recent days, thanks to that special time of year in New York, but we’re happy to report that style salve for runway-deprived San Franciscans is on its way.

The 27th annual Macy’s Passport benefit and fashion show takes place this week and, unlike the shows we’ve been drooling over in the Big Apple, this one is open to the public.

Outdoor Exploratorium at Fort Mason Center
Via Exploratorium

Spread across Fort Mason Center since mid-March, the Outdoor Exploratorium takes hands-on science outside with twenty exhibits designed to help visitors better understand natural phenomena of the Bay Area. Exhibits include a super telescope showing how the Golden Gate Bridge fluxes with temperature change; low-flow water fountain tastings of estuary salinity; motorized pier pilings covered in marine life; and sailboat wind indicators arranged to prove that you are not crazy when you think the wind in the city comes from all directions—it really does!

Ah, the beauty of living in California—sample wines from small, family-owned vineyards at one of largest tastings of local wines in the world. But don't get too tipsy—it's a family affair.
