Ladies, put on your skirts and get ready to run. Not merely a race, but a "social fitness experiment," the upcoming SkirtChaser 5K is an innovative concept where the women take off from the start line promptly promptly at 2 p.m., and three minutes later, the men follow. Regardless of gender, the first person to cross the finish line will go home with $500. Awards will also be given to the second and third place finishers, as well as a special "Skivvies Award" recipient. Are you ready for the best free music this side of the Mississippi? Dust off your cowboy hat and head to Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park for the ninth annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. The star-studded lineup is extraordinary and goes way beyond bluegrass faves such as Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris: Billy Bragg, Old 97s and alt-country songstress Neko Case are also on the bill.

Tour de Fat

We posted a few weeks ago about Tour de Fat and the Car-for-Bike Trade. Find out who won this Saturday at Tour de Fat in Golden Gate Park! The day begins at 11am with a bike parade (registration at 10a, see bottom of page for pre-registration) and performances at Speedway start at noon. This year's lineup includes March Fourth Marching Band and Sean Hayes, along with cabaret and circus performances. Celebrate the Car-for-Bike Trade winner's switch to two wheels beginning with a funeral procession at 2:30 and the official ceremony at 4:30. And of course, since the event is sponsored by New Belgium Brewing, spend your afternoon drinking tasty beers (and far more than just Fat Tire). The event is family friendly but be sure to bring ID to drink and cash for beer tokens. Curtain closes at 5pm. If the weather people are right, it should be a beautiful afternoon.

It may not be 1967, but you can think of the 11th annual Power to the Peaceful Festival as a modern-day summer of love. Best known as Michael Franti’s pet project, the two-day music, yoga, art and action event is a weekend dedicated to service towards peace. The Bay Area-born musician has always carried a message of unity with his work and PTTP is an extension of that philosophy. It’s all about plugging the community into ways they can, as individuals, help people and the planet.

Don't worry if you missed the SF Opera at Stern Grove. See them a little closer to home at this free annual event. Pack up a picnic and enjoy the day in the park—it's high culture on the cheap. And what's more—many of the stars from this year's season will be present for what they call "arias al fresco."

For those who missed the mind-blowing mud and music of Woodstock and others who would never willingly pitch a tent atop the hot, dusty playa at Burning Man, there is the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival.

Sure parking or MUNI to Golden Gate Park did get tricky. But once there, festival-goers (which ran the gamut from bankers to bohos) stepped into a wonderland of musical delights.
