Foreign Cinema sparkles at night

The restaurant question we get asked more than anything is definitely: "Where should we go for my friend's birthday party?" Generally speaking, the situation involves a party of 10, more than a party of 200, but this restaurant short-list can accomodate a wide scope of food preferences, ambiance and number of people. Since we're of the mindset that hard booze never hurts, we've put a star by the restaurants with a full bar. Go ahead now: Celebrate good times. Common!

Has it been only 10 years since the Mission first started to hyper-gentrify? I remember directing a gaggle of Marina blondes to Mission street, after they disembarked from their taxi on Valencia. Their destination? Foreign Cinema, the first Mission spot to offer valet parking.

And Foreign Cinema will celebrate its staying power on  August 20th with a 10th Anniversary Party.

In true style, Foreign Cinema is doing it up for their 10th anniversary. We're talking magicians, dancers, henna artists, acrobats, jugglers and, of course, plentiful cocktails and bites from the Foreign Cinema kitchen.

Proceeds from the evening will support the Bay Area nonprofit organization, DrawBridge, which is committed to providing creative art programs for homeless children and youth.

Gayle Pirie and John Clark of Foreign Cinema will opens their kitchen to cowgirls—well, to Sue Conley and Peg Smith, founders of Cowgirl Creamery, that is. The dinner, part of an ongoing celebration for the restaurant’s tenth anniversary, will feature courses showcasing Cowgirl’s signature cheeses, including one that Conley and Smith (who will be on hand throughout the dinner to answer questions) made expressly for this meal. Reservations are recommended.

With Mother's Day only three days away, chances are you've gotten the perfect card and gift taken care of. You even scored brunch reservations at Foreign Cinema to secure your 'favorite daughter' status. The only question left is the inevitable "What am I going to wear?", and if your mom is anything like ours, this sweet ensemble will leave her positively glowing (though it might also have a bit to do with the mimosas).

Foreign Cinema is celebrating an anniversary—this year is the restaurant’s tenth. Throughout 2009 they’ll be hosting guest chefs, beginning with a special Parsi-inspired (read: Indian) brunch with local cookbook author Niloufer Ichaporia-King.

Dine out on December 18 and you'll be helping the 150,000 San Franciscans who don't have enough to eat. Ten percent of the proceeds earned by restaurants participating in the Dine Out Against Hunger (including Maverick, A16, Americano, Sociale, Delfina, Foreign Cinema, Incanto, Kuleto's, Magnolia, Range, Serpentine, Slow Club and SPQR) will be donated to the San Francisco Food Bank.

The best bar food in the city. (Hint: It's not a burger.)We absolutely love the breezy, wide-open feel of Foreign Cinema and the glorious outdoor patio, but let’s face it—some nights you prefer to eat your dinner secure in the knowledge that a cocktail is, literally, within arm’s reach at all times.
