First Bite: Chilango Does Churros

(blog)

I'm not even a huge churro fan. I like fried dough, sure, but given a choice of desserts it wouldn't top my list. But the churros at Chilango, which opened earlier this fall on the site of the forgettable Aztec Taqueria at Church and Market, are so good that they make the other very good food that you might order before dessert almost pale in comparison. With their crisp exterior, just-cooked almost custardy interior and generous dusting of granulated sugar and Mexican cinnamon, these set the gold standard.

First Bite: Gracias Madre

(blog)

I will admit right up front that I have—well, had—a bias against cashew cheese. A strong, baseless bias against food items that call themselves something they are not: tofu posing as ice cream, seitan posing as sausage. I also have a strong bias against hemp parkas, for obvious reasons. But last night, at Gracias Madre, I experienced both hemp parkas as well as cashew cheese, and here I am to tell the tale.

2010: The Year of the Taco

(blog)
Mexican in the city, including Tacolicious, is growing up

It might be freezing and rainy, the economy might still suck, but it looks like the sun will come out tomorrow—or next year, rather—in the form of margs and tacos. We can't argue with that.

Diego's Umbrella is the original Spanish Surf Mexican Gypsy Pirate Pop Band from San Francisco.  Together for over seven years, the band creates music that will make you smile, weep, ponder and dance.

We can only hope Tres Agaves' bacon-wrapped hot dog will look like this.

In the past few years I've heard of other ballparks in America serving "gourmet" fare—sushi in Seattle, Cuban sandwiches in Miami, fish tacos in San Diego. At AT&T Park the food has historically been pretty standard—hot dogs, garlic fries, beer. But starting on Monday, opening day, there's a new game in town. Tres Agaves has taken over the three concession stands formerly leased by Compadres, so eating at the game is about to get a lot better. What's in store?

Not your mama's Mexican.

Not your mama's Mexican.Pastores is the kind of place each of us wishes we had in our own neighborhood. Because of its off-the-beaten-track location (in an unprepossessing storefront at the far southern reaches of Mission Street, just past Cortland Avenue) and its unpredictable hours, the restaurant is often half-empty—which is a travesty, especially because owner, chef and server Irma Calderon, a native of Mexico City, is a terrific cook. She sizes you up, then prescribes what you’ll be eating that day, fussing over you like a mother.

People venture down into the Avenues to Tommy’s for a buzz first, and then for the food. Join the tequila-swilling crowd standing three-deep at the snug bar as bartenders mix pitcher upon pitcher of margaritas and pour from one of the finest collections of 100-percent agave tequila. You can’t make reservations; the wait for one of the red vinyl booths in the ultra-casual dining room might last a drink or two. Eats:What's on your menu.: Open since 1965, Tommy’s highlights Yucatecan specials, which sets it apart from the food at your run-of-the-mill Cal-Mex eatery. Instead of a burrito or enchilada, opt for pollo pibil—a mild dish of marinated chicken baked in banana leaves—or the carne asada, a flavorful dish of sautéed steak and onions. Portions are hefty, so go easy on the chips.

Playa Azul lures devotees for reasons that go above and beyond the lime-and-tequila variety: Nine-piece mariachi band Mariachi Tradicion.

Playa Azul lures devotees for reasons that go above and beyond the lime-and-tequila variety: Nine-piece mariachi band Mariachi Tradicion. It may have earned a reputation as the most authentic sit-down Mexican restaurant in the Mission, but Playa Azul lures devotees for reasons that go above and beyond the lime-and-tequila variety: Nine-piece mariachi band Mariachi Tradicion blends violins, trumpet and guitar on soaring numbers such as “Amor Eterno” and “Mujeres Divinas” (which, incidentally, you can also find on their album Las Canciones Mas Populares de Mariachi).
