The Hater's Guide to Valentine's Day

(blog)

Oh, how sweet it is—the dreaded V-Day is back and once again it falls on a weekend. We're giving you fair warning: stay indoors or risk running headfirst into couples galore running into each other's arms, holding hands and canoodling on the streets. If you're anything like us, Valentine's Day is a holiday you love to hate, no matter your relationship status and there are plenty of cityslickers who feel the same way.

Spend Valentine’s day at a five-course, five-flick dinner—featuring foie gras, chocolate stout ice cream and more, all for $55 ($75 with wine pairings). The dinner will be held at the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts and begins with cocktails and live music at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Each course of the meal will be paired with a short film.

Charles Chocolates goes classic.

Whether you're celebrating with a sweetheart, a gang of single buds or by yourself, chocolate is in order. Here are our picks.

Have yourself a steamy Valentine's Day—reserve your spot for Cal Academy's Sex and Science wine and dine tour. During a pre-dinner tour and champagne reception, you'll get acquainted with the African penguins, which mate for life, before puckering up with the cichlids, which frequently lock lips. Take some lessons from the Academy’s male tarantulas, which perform dances for their mates, or learn how to sing electric love songs from a female knife fish. After all that science, you'll enjoy a romantic four-course dinner in the Academy’s award-winning restaurant, The Moss Room.

Express your love for science—Cal Academy is hosting a Valentine's Day themed nightlife. Romance and Reproduction will give you a glimpse into the animal kingdom's most amorous creatures and unique sexual behaviors. Discover the species with the world’s largest sexual organ. Find a snake at the center of a “breeding ball." Learn what it's like to be a gender-bending clownfish. Music by resident DJ Jeff Stallings will feature Balearic, African, Bedouin and Latin beats to keep you going until the end.
