We've made a resolution to live on the edge next year. So, suit up and get in the game with these Wine Country adventures.
Sonoma Coast Divers, Rohnert Park/Jenner
Some of the bravest—and yes, insane—deep sea enthusiasts free dive into the Jenner Coast in search of abalone. Divers pry the reluctant mollusks from the underwater outcrops using an abalone iron. The experts at Sonoma Coast Divers can show you how to do it—from cleaning and pounding, to preparing and more.
Sonoma Canopy Tours, Occidental
Hidden away off Bohemian Highway is a zip line course just waiting to carry you up to 25 miles per hour through a redwood forest and over a ravine 300-feet below. Eleven different platforms test your clambering skills, daring you to scale a skinny spiral staircase and wobble across a 175-foot-long sky bridge. Look out below!
Crazy Creek Glider Rides, Middletown
Just 30 minutes from Napa Valley, tucked in the eastern foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, waits a gliderport at 970 feet above sea level. A glider plane, for those unfamiliar, looks like a banana with wings and a Pez-style pop-top. Once inside you are strapped into a tiny seat behind a FAA certified commercial pilot. Soar over dormant volcanoes and Clear Lake in your engine-free plane.
Simraceway Performance Driving Center, Sonoma Raceway, Sonoma
Driving like this isn’t for the faint of heart, or perhaps even the sane, but after your Audi Sportscar Experience training class, you'll be flooring it on the NASCAR track until your teeth rattle and head spins. Want to learn extra tricks? Instructors include actual Formula Car racers for added thrills.
NorCal Sports Fishing, Bodega Bay
Though winter waters can be rough, don’t expect drama of the Deadliest Catch variety in Bodega Bay. Year-round, charter boats go out to wrangle rock cod, 25-pound-plus salmon, albacore, halibut, and even Humboldt giant squid. Prime Dungeness crabbing runs from mid-November through February.
