Snowden returns to the scene, killer bees pose a threat, and more news from the past week.

Edward Snowden Joins Twitter, CBS

"In less than six hours of creating a Twitter account, former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden amassed over 640,000 followers—six times more than the NSA’s account. Snowden’s first tweet, "Do you hear me now?" was a subtle jab at government officials who labeled him as a traitor after he leaked classified information about numerous U.S. surveillance programs around the world... But perhaps the more symbolic gesture is the sole Twitter account he chose to follow: the NSA."

Killer Bees in the Bay Area, SFGate

"An Africanized breed of honeybees—sometimes known as 'killer bees' because of their swarming, aggressive and deadly nature when a colony is threatened—has found its way to the Bay Area for the first time, researchers say...Until now, the bees had been detected only as far north as Mariposa County in California’s more inland Central Valley, but they were probably attracted by the Bay Area’s warming temperatures."

Calculate the Age of Your Heart,CNN

"About 69 million Americans are not as young at heart as they believe they are, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. Using a simple calculator that measures age, blood pressure and BMI, the CDC found that more than 40% of Americans had hearts that were five or more years older than their actual ages. CDC Director Tom Frieden said that the heart risk calculator was a simple way to reveal a person's risk of heart attack or stroke...'For every American, learning heart age can be a clear call to take charge of your health.'"

All Hail La Boulangerie de San Francisco, SFist

"The rumor was true, and La Boulange founder Pascal Rigo is reopening some of the shuttered bakery locations under a slightly different name, La Boulangerie de San Francisco. Rigo told the Business Times that he's opting to revive six of he bakery chain's most popular locations — Pine Street, Fillmore Street, Union Street, Cole Valley, Hayes Valley and Noe Valley — after feeling like former customers were "lost" without them. 'They were not sure where they’d buy that almond croissant,' he said, implying there are no other bakeries worthy patronizing in the city. 'We cannot let that go.'"

Seals Mysteriously Dying on the CA Coast, Washington Post

"Guadalupe fur seals, a threatened species found off the coast of Southern California and Mexico, are experiencing an 'unusual mortality event,' the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced this week. NOAA defines an unusual mortality event as 'a stranding that is unexpected; involves a significant die-off of any marine mammal population; and demands immediate response.' Since January, approximately 80 seals have been found stranded along the shore of central California — about eight times more than is usual for the species."
