Recent New York transplant Lia Kes wants you to go places in her clothes. As in more places than one.
“What I really try to do is items that will give you more, that will be season-less, that will transition from morning to evening, where you can leave the office and have a date,” Kes explained at last night’s press preview for her first retail store’s grand opening celebration, taking place tomorrow night.
And true to her intent, dresses, tops and skirts promising a plethora of options hang from the racks of her Cow Hollow boutique, whose doors first opened in December after the Israeli-born designer relocated with her husband from New York to San Francisco. Doubling as her studio, the shop currently houses the label’s fall and holiday collections, and spring arrivals are expected in store during the last week of the month.
A color-blocked dress encircled with zippers transitions from a fitted strapless cocktail number into a top that could easily go casual paired with jeans. The classic front of a long button-down shirt gives way to an elegant cut-out back that will hide out nicely under a blazer or cardigan for day wear, but become instantly appropriate for evening once either is removed. Another top’s deep v can be worn in front or back, while yet another offers a zippered neck line that can be adjusted to show more or less shoulder.
Accompanying these are dresses with simple silhouettes and gently defined waists, t-shirts with edgy fringe panels and such statement-makers as a date-worthy black mini adorned in feathers.
“I was really making an effort to do as basic as I can, but with a twist,” Kes told us.
Get an eyeful of all the twists Kes has to offer tomorrow night during a grand opening celebration complete with models donning current looks from the collection, bubbly and nibbles.
Official opening party, Feb. 4, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Lia Kes, 3024 Fillmore St. (at Union), 415-829-2225, www.liakes.com.
