After years of sharing Van Ness Avenue with tourists bound for Fisherman's Wharf and hipsters heading to the Mission in search of pour over coffee, Muni's busy 47 and 49 bus lines are getting their own traffic lanes. Look out for luminous art pieces to mark each new bus station.

First proposed back in 2013, the Van Ness Avenue Bus Rapid Transit Project is teaming up with the San Francisco Arts Commission to build three sculptures that will demarcate and illuminate the Market Street, Sutter-Bush, and Union Street Stations. 

Los Angeles–based artist Jorge Pardo was selected for the project, based on his design for a trio of 20-foot tall sculptures that appear to have been dusted off and brought straight from La Playa. They are "fabricated from steel that will be illuminated from within," according to the SFAC.

Currently, construction is slated to begin early next year, with completion expected in late 2018.
