Schuyler Bailey is hungry. Here are her cravings this week.
1. Tartine's Morning Bun
There isn't really a day that goes by that I wouldn't like this sugar and cinnamon-y morsel in my hot little hands. Thankfully, Tartine Bakery's recent merger with Blue Bottle means they'll soon be much more available. Score. (Mission)
2. Chicken Salad from Souvla
Equal parts substantial—see the spit-fired free-range chicken—and healthy, with a smattering of lively fruit and veggies, including fennel, navel orange, pickled red onion, and pea shoots, this salad is what lunch dreams are made of. Plus, a topping of Mizithra cheese satisfies a dairy indulgence. Craving carbs? Get it all wrapped up in a fresh-from-the-oven pita. Uh huh. (Hayes Valley)
3. French Fries at Al's Place
Leave it to Aaron London to take fries to the next level—the chef, who cut his teeth elevating vegetarian fare at Napa's Ubuntu, serves his taters with smoked apple sauce for a salty-sweet combo that's all right. (Mission)
4. Aatxe's Octopus
A trip to San Sebastian last summer has had me pining for pintxos for months, so when Aatxe opened, I couldn't wait to try their Spanish-inspired fare. The octopus, served with kohlrabi, avocado, and salsa verde, is a Californified take on the staple, and it's cooked as well as any I had overseas. (Market)
5. Counter Culture'sTwentieth Anniversary Blend
I like my coffee sweet—so sue me. That's why the latest blend from this North Carolina roaster is perfectly suited for my morning fix. Plus, they're opening a roastery in Emeryville this weekend (check out the Saturday open house for workshops, tours, and tastings), which means the beans are fresh as can be. Available at Stanza Coffee (Mission).
