MateVeza is celebrated here in the west for its flagship IPA brewed with yerba mate. Its Cerveceria de MateVeza at the corner of 18th and Church is frequented by local beer lovers for its eclectic nanobrewery tap offerings, its well-stocked cooler of 100 types of craft beers, and its flaky Argentinean empanadas from El Porteño. But until it runs out sometime this summer, the cerveceria may best be known for its Boston Tea Party Saison, a collaboration ale created with craft beer heavyweight Boston Beer Company, brewer of the Sam Adams line of beers.

This unlikely beer-making duo joined forces last year after Partner/Brewer Jim Woods at MateVeza applied to the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program, which the Boston Beer Company uses to provide coaching, mentoring and loans to companies in the craft beer, food and hospitality industries. MateVeza and Rochester NY’s Roc Brewing were selected to take part in the Business Experienceship portion of the program, an extended mentoring initiative available to craft brewers.

The MateVeza and Sam Adams collaboration is a Saison, a Belgian farmhouse style ale, that started with a mix of Pilsner and wheat malts, included citrusy Sorachi hops and which was fermented with a Saison yeast. Both brewers also added their signatures: MateVezas’ herb, yerba mate, and for Sam Adams, their exclusive Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF), a blend of wild yeasts and bacteria. The resulting orange hued brew is crisper that you might expect from a Saison, the KMF giving it a tang rather than a funky sourness.

Woods noted that he and the brewers at Sam Adams went through several batches before arriving at the final recipe. Woods wanted to use the Japanese Sorachi hops, which the Sam Adams brewers had on hand and were glad to provide. “But,” Woods added, “I also wanted them to include their KMF in the Saison and that request had to go all the way to the top for approval.”

The Boston Tea Party Saison is only on draft at Cerveceria de MateVeza and only till the batch runs out so get it while you can. It makes a refreshing capper to a sunny afternoon at Dolores Park.
