Mid-Market is looking a little brighter this week thanks to the addition of 12 new artist-made "chairs" hanging from circular bike racks. 

The chairs (or as we prefer to think of them, swings) were installed last Thursday and Friday by six local artists who prefer to remain anonymous.

In an interview with Hoodline, the group's leader revealed that he funded the project with a $500 grant from The Awesome Foundation, a local-turned-global nonprofit that awards micro-grants to people working on projects that are, you guessed it, awesome. For the last few months, he who shall remain nameless has assembled bolts, boards, wires, paints, and a small army of volunteers to create and install the colorful swings.

“I want to encourage a discussion about how we can get more use out of public spaces,” the artist says.

The chairs, even when occupied, do not prevent cyclists from locking up their bikes on the racks, and the artists have purposefully chosen bike racks that are less-frequently used along Market Street.

In total, there will be 16 different swings installed on Market Street by the end of this week—so grab a coffee and take a seat.
