ArtPoint, a Fine Arts Museum affiliate whose goal is to encourage young professionals to become more involved in the local art scene, packed 111 Minna Gallery Thursday night with its first aMuse lecture series event of the 2009 season. The discussion "15 Minutes with Andy Warhol" (which lasted closer to two hours than 15 minutes) gave local art lovers a chance to parse Warhol's work and its lasting effects on the art community, even 22 years after the Pittsburgh, Penn. native met his untimely death.
Critic and curator, Laura Janku, moderated, while Timothy Anglin Burgard, curator-in-charge of the American Art department at the Fine Arts Museum; Ron English, contemporary pop artist; and Richard Meyer, associate professor of art history and fine arts at the University of Southern California; all served as panelists and fielded questions from a very curious crowd. After the discussion concluded, guests enjoyed a live DJ dance party, while sipping era-inspired Martini & Ross cocktails.
The lecture served as a kick-off for the Warhol Live exhibition at the de Young Museum, which will run from Feb. 14 through May 17. ArtPoint's next event will be a Pop Art party, which ties in with the exhibit, on Feb. 21. For more information, visit the website at www.artpoint.org.
