Ah, spring has sprung. There's nothing like peas, asparagus, morels, strawberries and really expensive rhubarb.
Our office has no walls and very little space which means that it's a good place to start a rant. This is the latest from the rhubarb-obsessed food editor corner:
So, Jessica was just saying: "I was Avedano's last Saturday and buying pork shoulder—from pigs that had probably been hand-pet and raised in fields of wildflowers. The pork was $6.50 a pound. Then I saw rhubarb, which I was about to get to make your favorite rhubarb coffeecake, and the rhubarb was $8.50 a pound. It grows like a weed in my hometown in Vermont. It would be cheaper to have my mother ship it!"
In Jessica's honor (and admittedly with visions of the coffeecake for an office snack tomorrow), I called Avedano's to see why their rhubarb is so expensive, but they were out and the guy knew nothing about it and suggested I call Bi-Rite, which has it in right now for $4 a pound. Less than half the price.
Let us eat cake.
(For Jessica's rhubarb coffeecake recipe, ask sweetly and I bet she'll type it up.)
