If you've ever wandered into the kaleidoscopic wonderland of Britex, you'll know it's a place where maker dreams come true—where no project is too grand, and you can spend days on end sorting through endless fabrics, faux furs, buttons, ribbons, and patches.

An icon of Union Square since it opened here in 1952, this San Francisco Legacy Business has a devoted following among Bay Area designers and crafters who come to feast on its four floors of over-the-top delicious fashion and home textiles. But in the fall of 2016, the building's owners filed a plan with the city stating that it would convert three of the four floors into office space; Britex was on notice. Now, after 65 years on Geary Street, the beloved family-run store has toted its countless bolts around the corner to Post Street, where it celebrated its grand re-opening, near stylish local neighbors Gump's and Shreve & Co., on January 11th.

This new era of Britex Fabrics will be just as wonderful as the last, with high ceilings and plentiful natural light filling the 8,000 square foot two-story shop, where every last inch of wall space brims with designer fabrics and trimmings.

"We are so thrilled with how the new store has turned out and are ready to embrace our future in the city," said owner Sharman Spector (whose parents, Martin and Lucy Spector, started the business) in a recent release. "We look forward to helping all our clients rediscover our collection and inspire even more ingenuity moving forward."

But what is to become of the old landmark's iconic red sign? Back in September, the Chronicle reported that it was too large for the narrow Post Street building and that likely only the horizontal Britex portion would grace the new facade. With the help of the new landlord and Supervisor Aaron Peskin, we are happy to report that at least a portion of the historic sign will be making the move in the coming weeks.
