One of San Francisco’s can’t-miss fashion events of the year takes place tomorrow night in SoMa. In case you’ve been trapped in a dressing room somewhere and haven’t heard the buzz (not likely, we know, but possible), the Discarded to Divine benefit held each year taps fashion designers to create garments from donated clothing and textiles and auctions the finished wearables off to raise much-needed funds for the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s programs aiding the poor and homeless. Recycled fashion? Design for a good cause? A chance give Project Runway’s Sweet P props on her copious arm tattoos? It goes without saying that we.are.so.there.
During the event preview held last month at the de Young Museum, we enjoyed getting an up close and personal view of the garments from special guest designers such as the aforementioned Sweet P, Barbara Beccio, Miranda Caroligne, VAGADU and Michael Boris. From quirky and crafty to elegant to edgy, we found the creativity on display to be inspiring. We were not at all surprised to learn that the experience had a way of inspiring participating designers. Designers Jill Giordano and Brian Scheyer of gr.dano were so pleased with their resulting design that they incorporated a version of it into their fall/winter 2009 collection. Take note: VIP tickets for the event are already sold out, but you can still score general admission tickets ($65) until 3 p.m. today by calling 415-977-1270. After that, you’ll have to try your luck at the door tomorrow night.
