Among New York's most iconic venues, the Waldorf Astoria is a legend among hotels. Since its opening in 1931, Nina Saemundsson's nickel and bronze winged nude sculpture has marked the Waldorf's Park Avenue entrance, which opens onto a grand lobby where 148,000 hand-cut marble tiles comprise the mosaic floor, designed by French artist Louis Rigal, and gold and silver leaf climbs upon the walls. The hotel's treasures include a great clock originally designed for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the Starlight Roof, a spectacular room with hand-painted murals and Deco metalwork that once hosted performances by the likes of Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Glenn Miller.
While there are no details yet surrounding the interior aesthetic of SF's incoming Waldorf, we do know that its address will be worthy of a show-stopping stay. As the San Francisco Business Times reports today, the hotel will occupy the first 21 floors of the stunning new tower, the second tallest in the city, to be built at First and Mission Streets by London-based architectural firm Foster + Partners, in partnership with SF-based Heller Manus Architects. Hirsch Bedner Associates, which has offices in the city, will oversee the interiors.
According to the Business Times, the hotel will have 171 rooms and suites, plus several restaurants and a luxurious Waldorf spa, and is expected to open around 2020.
