Not that we need any extra incentive to enjoy the libations of that wonderful country south of our border, but Cinco de Mayo is a good excuse to do it. And while I love tequila, mezcal and Mexican beer as much as anyone—and drink them often—the real star of drinking Mexican style is the humble lime, that beautiful, perfect citrus with an inimitable flavor and the ability to perk up any light, beach beer and to match seamlessly with all agave-based spirits. All hail the lime.

Certainly they'll be reveling in lime at Cantina tonight (where I sometimes pull shifts behind the bar). Starting at 2 pm, they're serving $4 Cazadores tequila margaritas and signature Cazadores cocktails slung by the Cazadores Tequila Ambassador himself, Manny Hinojosa, as well as ice-cold cans of $2 Tecate with "barrio tunes" being rocked by Resident DJ, B Love. Snacks (you'll need them) are by the folks at La Cocina.

I will be stopping by there, but the bigger part of my night will be on a bar and restaurant tour with the king of mezcal, Ron Cooper of Del Maguey, and the founders of the hot new brand of mezcal—Sombra—Richard Betts and Charles Bieler. We'll be hitting Cantina, for sure, as well as Beretta, Nopa, Elixir, Presidio Social Club, RN74, and Gitane. So look for us along the way. Stay tuned for my report tomorrow.
