City CarShare Powered by Carma Has a New Fleet Designed by Zio Ziegler
19 September 2016
Founded in 2001, City CarShare is the original carsharing community of the Bay Area, and over the past 15 years, the nonprofit has grown to serve over 50,000 members. In June 2015, City CarShare partnered with mobility and transportation expert Carma Technology in a strategic alliance, and rebranded the Bay Area carsharing organization to City CarShare Powered by Carma.
City CarShare Powered by Carma already has the greenest carsharing fleet in the U.S.—50 percent of the rides are electric, plugin hybrid or hybrid models—but now, as part of the new partnership, the company is unleashing a new electric fleet/ art project on the streets of San Francisco and Berkeley.
Using the $1.7 million grant awarded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, City CarShare Powered by Carma partnered with Bay Area artist Zio Ziegler to launch a limited number of PHEVs (plugin hybrid electric vehicles) wrapped in original art and made available to reserve by the hour (rates start at $5.75 per hour). Sixteen PHEV art cars feature 5 original Zio Ziegler designs and can be found zipping all over the Bay Area. Models include the Ford CMax Energi Electric Hybrid, the Ford Focus AllElectric, and the Chevy Volt Hybrid.
" I want these art cars to be available to anyone with a creative vision in order to help them facilitate their projects or day-to-day necessities. A society, while facilitated by technology, often seems to be guided and remembered by its creativity. The goal is that these art cars serve as a reminder of that on a daily basis, and make it a bit easier for those creatives," said Ziegler.
Worried about renting an electric vehicle? To combat range anxiety (the fear that your battery will run out of juice before you reach your destination), there are plenty of charging stations throughout SF and the East Bay including downtown Berkeley, UCSF, Cole Valley, City College of SF, Panhandle, China Basin, Mission, Mission Bay, and Civic Center. Best of all, members don't have to fill up the car with gas at the end of the reservations; users just return the car to its parking space, plug the vehicle into the charging station, and continue with their day. It's that easy.
