Hung Liu is one of the most significant Chinese painters working in the U.S., and for the first time a major retrospective of her exquisite and thought-provoking artwork can be seen at the Oakland Museum of California. Featuring around 80 paintings, along with photographs and sketchbooks, Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu is a can’t-miss exhibit. Liu’s large-scale oil paintings explore the world of her native China and also examine life for Chinese immigrants in the U.S. Runs through June 30, Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak Street.
Tapestries are typically thought of as one of the more traditional types of artwork, but what about ones that weave scenes relevant to today’s world? That’s what artists in residence Andy Diaz Hope and Laurel Roth at San Francisco’s de Young Museum have attempted to do. Their massive and highly detailed triptych tapestry titled The Conflicts is on view at the museum through the month of March. The triptych focuses on three traditional conflicts: Human vs. nature, human vs. himself/herself, and human vs. human. Runs through March 31, Kimball Education Gallery at the de Young Museum, 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive.
