This Saturday, six Bay Area athletes will attempt something that many (most?) people would consider totally insane: swimming from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge – a 30 mile distance through frigid, great white shark infested waters (fun fact: this region of the California coast is called the “Red Triangle” on account of its famed inhabitants. You know, because red is the color of blood.) They would be the first relay team ever to accomplish the feat.
These brave souls hail from the Night Train Swimmers, a group of open-water swimmers dedicated to doing super intense stuff like this to raise money for charity – in this case, the Wounded Warrior Project, devoted to providing services for severely injured service men/women. Check out the swim’s website for donation info, plus live updates on how the swimmers are faring throughout the ordeal, er, event. Better yet, head over to the bridge between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday to cheer on the swimmers as they reach the shore. At the very least, keep your fingers crossed.
