When I get a craving for something, I become so singularly focused on satisfying it that I can’t let it go. It's recently BBQ that's gotten a hold on me, and until now, I haven't been able to find a spot in SF that compares to Everett & Jones in the East Bay.
I finally tried Smokin’ Warehouse, which opened last October, and am happy to report that I now have a go-to spot this side of the Bay. Smokin' Warehouse is nestled in an uber-industrial, loading-dock infested area of Bayview, but don't let the location dissuade you. Their 10-hour smoking process and melt-in your mouth brisket and pork ribs are well worth the trip.
After a brief perusal of the menu, which consists of platters, sandwiches, burgers, sides, breakfast items, and, if you’re really going for it, strictly meat—I decided on a combo platter of ribs and brisket, with potato salad and baked beans.
Chef/owner Bill Lee treats the meat to a brine and dry rub before sending it on a long trip in dual smokers stoked with fruitwood. The result is no-knife-necessary, perfectly tender meats with that divine smokiness that up until this point had eluded me in the city. The brisket comes slathered in a vinegary tomato sauce that also serves as a delicious dip for a thick slab of cornbread. The potato salad was mayonnaise-heavy but good, and the baked beans were, dear Lord, speckled with bits of pulled pork.
The place is no frills, just the way old school BBQ should - you're served through a small window and sent to devour the the goods at either a lone picnic table or in your car (bring napkins). Also, a brisket sandwich will run you under $8 and probably fill you up for the entirety of the day.
But alas, I could only get through about half of the platter. I got my free coke refill, packed up the leftovers and headed to my car with clothes smelling like beef smoke, happy at last.
