Editors' Picks: Fixer Upper Bikes, Taylor Swift's Cats, Trench Cloak, & More
17 October 2014
7x7 editors reveal what they're salivating over this week.
I was pleasantly surprised this week to learn that my personal style icon, Blake Lively, and I have more in common than just the goal of bodacious hair (she achieves; me... not so much) we've both got buns in the oven, which basically makes us soul sisters. So, I promptly tore through her new lifestyle site, Preserve, to see what magical products she had culled under her umbrella of American heritage style and discovered the Los Ojos Trench Cloak. It's as much Navajo blanket as it is chic hooded poncho, made with Pendleton wool in a spot-on black and white print, and I need it in my life. — Schuyler Bailey (@SchuylerBailey)
Felines
This is something I—along with other likeminded shut-ins, bloggers, and women of a certain age—have been saying for eons: Cats are rad. And this week they pounce to the forefront. First, we have Taylor Swift'snew Diet Coke commercial? It features La Swift, Olivia Benson (her kitty named after the popular Law & Order: SVU heroine), and magically multiplying cats. The ad is, in a word, everything. Then we have Shupette by Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura, a new Japanese beauty line created in honor of Choupette Lagerfeld, the noted designer's well-groomed pet. This is an ode to all the fixer uppers out there: The tumbledown homes, the mid-career slumpers, the rescue dogs, the rusty Schwinns…This vintage beauty was in pretty bad shape (tore-up tire tubes, bare handlebars, nonexistent brakes) when I got my hands on it, but thanks to some TLC by Andy from Sprocket 415 (the best mobile bike repair in town), it’s now adorable in that tooling-around-the-French-countryside kind of way. — Leilani Marie Labong (@llcoolbabe)

African Bazaar @ Voss Foundation
At the Ritz-Carlton on Tuesday Oct. 14, the Voss Foundation hosted its annual San Francisco luncheon to raise awareness and funds for its clean water and sanitation initiatives in Sub-Saharan African. Honoring Kristy Caylor—founder and creative director of the socially conscious luxury fashion brand Maiyet (sold exclusively at Barneys)—the event offered women the chance to support communities in need through the purchase of artisan goods handcrafted in Africa. I couldn't resist picking up a few things, including a gold paper-pulp bowl made from recycled magazines and newspapers in Swaziland; a malachite dish from the Democratic Republic of Congo; and this clutch, made in Liberia at Jola House, a grassroots organization that aims to reduce economic inequality for women. The proceeds raised from our donations and purchases went to build two much-needed water wells in Africa.
