We’re cruising right into Spring with some killer parties that'll keep your heads bopping and bodies grooving as an array of DJs descend upon The City. This month brings deep tones for basking in the sun and long, mysterious evenings when night falls.
Voices of Black have been rising in the ranks as one of the smoothest DJ duos to surface over the last year. Picked up by Wolf+Lamb Records last year, they released a full LP, Plastic Dolls that dips into elements of hip-hop, disco, and 70s funk throughout. Don’t let their fresh faces fool you, these guys are straight on it when it comes to production, having recently collaborated with their friend Rap Lisa and wrapped up a tour around Europe. This is their first appearance in San Francisco, alongside Jay Haze, Beni and our own hardworking Dave Aju. Come get loose if you know what’s good for you on April 5 at Public Works.
DJ Harvey is a living legend. He plays records like no other. He destroys DJ rigs like no other. For well over 20 years, Harvey has had his hand in countless productions, parties and venues while criss-crossing the globe. The bearded madman is proof that dance music only gets better with age, having recently released Locussolus on Uruguayan label International Feel. Know for marathon sets behind the decks, DJ Harvey continues to blend genres, constantly reinventing himself and reworking the classics approaching them with some of best ears in production around. This pioneer continues to push on through a sea of digital music, with a big grin and a soft spot for vinyl. DJ Harvey plays Public Works April 9.
The Detroit styles of its native son Kenny Larkin will be in full effect when the One Nation Under a Groove party takes hold of SOMA’s Monarch this month. Known on the scene as one of the godfathers of techno, Larkin has been DJing for 20 years. Mixing in just the right amount of soul, he has created two decades of wonderful music that have attracted club goers and dance music enthusiasts worldwide. With a recent number one spot on Beatport’s Top 100 techno chart for his remix of “Future” by Inner City, Larkin has proved time and time again that a love for the genre he helped shape flourishes to this day. Supporting him will be Monty Luke who recently successfully launched his own label Black Catalogue to crank out underground tunes of his liking. Duo Leathal and Billy Jaz will complete the line up on April 14.
There is no party we love more that kicks off the season like the Sunset Opener at Stafford Lake in Novato. For nearly 20 years Solar, J-Bird and Galen have been throwing what can be summed up as the Rites of Spring for anyone looking to dance to House classics among hundreds of like-minded brothers and sisters. These guys have put the Bay Area on the map with their epic outdoor events, appealing to the longtime devotees and newcomers alike with their disco utopia. Don’t worry, the party continues back in city at Monarch well into the night. The gathering goes down April 22 and yes, it’s free.
