For this edition of Escape From SF, we headed 100 miles north along the ever twisting Route 1 to The Sea Ranch on the Sonoma Coast. The small, highly planned community sits on ten miles of rugged coast line, with miles of private trails, providing panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, massive rocks, migrating whales and spectacular sunsets. 

In the early 1960's architect and planner Al Boeke conceived the original design guidelines, with the central idea that buildings have a site specific relationship with the landscape, creating harmony between a home and the natural settings surrounding it. 

To accomplish this they’ve exteriors are often left as unpainted wood or muted stains, a lack of overhanging eaves, and baffles on exterior lighting to help blend into the landscape. Even further muting development there are no street lights, leaving a dazzling night sky to be viewed. They also have a low impact herd of sheep to keep the grasses and shrubs down along the coast.
