Last night's opening of The Plant Café on the Embarcadero—the second location of what was formerly called Lettüs Café in the Marina—marked the dawn of a mini organic empire for owners Matthew Guelke and Mark Lewis. Softly lit by dozens of Edison bulb pendants, the restaurant catered to stylish couples and eco-moms, enjoying a peak at the historic shipping station resuscitated by architect Cass Calder Smith—who also designed the nearby La Mar Cebicheria. Upping the ante set by the sleek juice-and-salad bar on Steiner Street, the new solar-powered location includes an all-day café with mezzanine seating plus a separate dining room across the way offering a larger menu, including wood-oven pizza, clay-pot chicken and seafood dishes appropriate for the waterfront location (don't miss the seared dayboat scallops in a coconut-lime reduction). Proving organic dining is far from over, Guelke and Lewis are scheduled to open a third location on California and Pine in late September.
