Fellas, fellas, fellas…You've probably just spent four days holed up in a bar or glued to the couch in March Madness heaven. You no doubt loved every second of it and are already fired up for the Sweet 16 on Thursday. Like an addict, you are hooked. Making matters worse, your girlfriend, fiancée, or wife is starting to feel neglected. She is fed up with buddies, booze, and basketball being your priorities.
A savvy man would have planned a romantic evening filled with sweet gestures and seemingly spontaneous acts of love for their significant other on the days leading up to the NCAA Tournament. I’m betting you are all in the doghouse.
Let's soften the blow for when you remind your lovely lady that the sports bar will call your name again this Thursday afternoon and she ought to plan another girls’ weekend.
Start off by surprising her with a symbol of your affection. Flowers at work can be cheesy, but if your lady loves the attention, it’s a great start to getting your butt off the couch and back into the bed. Your best bet is the Wholesale Flower Mart (640 Brannan Street, 415-781-8410). There, you'll get fantastic deals and plenty of help for the florally challenged male.
Depending on your doghouse status or the level of debauchery you plan to explore in this coming weekend, you might need to take her out to dinner on Tuesday or Wednesday night. Make reservations at the place she’s always wanted to try. Pacific Café (7000 Geary Blvd., 415-387-7091) is an excellent choice for procrastinators. No need for reservations because they don’t take them, but they provide friendly pours of red and white wine while you wait to be seated, and the seafood dishes are delicious. If you can’t afford a dinner out because your bracket is busted, make a stop at one of the Whole Foods in the city (there are five) and ask for some help in putting together a meal that says, 'Babe, you are still my top priority.' Just not on game days, but we’ll keep that between us.
For a sure bet to free your weekend, team up with a buddy and book massages for your women at Burke Williams (845 Market Street #501, 415-694-7980) in the Westfield shopping center downtown. They can spend the whole day enjoying the spa while the boys watch games with a guilt free conscious. Everybody wins!
Moral of the story: Boys will be boys, but we still need to act like men occasionally and treat our better halves with the respect and love they deserve.
I’ll see those who’ve successfully walked the tight rope at The Blue Light(1969 Union Street, 415-922-5510) this weekend for pitchers, tacos, and Sweet 16/Elite 8 madness.
