Foodie Updates: Home Skillet Comes to Market, James Beard Finalists, and More
21 March 2014
Hear ye, food fans: We've got some news for you this week. The people behind successful mid-Market breakfast and lunch spot Little Griddle are opening a spinoff in the former Pearl's space; the Outerlands reopening is delayed and we've got some slightly sad news about the chef; and a bevy of Bay Area chefs and others were nominated for James Beard Awards this week.
First off, the recently shutteredPearl's Deluxe Burgers location at the lively corner of 6th and Market already has a new tenant, and it's John Chow, the owner of nearby Little Griddle. As he tells Inside Scoop, the plan is to do something akin to Little Griddle though not exactly the same, called Home Skillet, with a hefty breakfast menu (including four breakfast sandwiches) and, kind of like Pearl's, a dozen burger options at lunch, as well as some sandwiches. Look for it to open in a few weeks. [Inside Scoop]
There's an important update about Outerlands, which closed on New Year's Day for a renovation that will include expansion into the space next door. Owners Dave Muller and Lana Porcello have decided to part ways with chef Brett Cooper, who brought the restaurant a ton of attention and critical raves over the past three years. The plan, when they hopefully reopen in April, will be to simplify things and return to the type of menu they had when they first opened, pre-Cooper. Also, they'll only be open for brunch and lunch to start, with dinner to follow, as well as an announcement about a new chef. [Inside Scoop]
Important calzone news: The famed, off-menu, deep-fried meatball calzone they were serving at Pizzeria Delfina on California Street is, allegedly, not being served anymore. React accordingly. [Eater]
And, following on the past year's glut of new beer halls and breweries, yet another brewery/beer hall has just debuted: Barrel Head Brewhouse, up at Fulton and Masonic. It's a project from former Park Chalet assistant brewmaster Ivan Hopkinson, and the brewery operation is not quite up and running yet. Expect house brews (and growlers!) in six to eight weeks, but until then there's a full bar, food menu, and beers from cult brewers like Belhaven, Ballast Point, Stone, Goose Island, Ninkasion tap. Finally, this year's James Beard Award finalists were announced this week, and topping the list are local nominees Coqueta (Best New Restaurant), Benu (Corey Lee, Best Chef in the West), Coi (Daniel Patterson, Best Chef in the West), State Bird Provisions (Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski, Best Chef in the West), Manresa (David Kinch, Outstanding Chef), and The Slanted Door (Outstanding Restaurant). See all the nominees here. The winners will be announced on May 5. [SFist]
