Foodie Updates: Tosca Reopens, TBD Approaches, Stars Returns for One Night Only
12 October 2013
This is the big reopening week for the legendary Tosca Cafe at the hands of NY restaurateurs Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield, and we're just two weeks away from the opening of AQ spinoff TBD.
Thursday night marked the official reopening of Tosca in North Beach, where Friedman and chef April Bloomfield have transformed the 93-year-old bar into a fresher version of itself, complete with real leather-covered booths in back, a new kitchen that looks out onto the dining room, and a brand new cocktail program and Italian food menu. The space looks much the same as it did before, but with a little added polish, and they even kept one of the big, antique espresso machines at the front of the bar, which now steams the revised "House Capuccinos" with organic milk, Dandelion chocolate, Armagnac, and bourbon. Added bonus: There will be good Chianti served in fiaschi (basket-covered bottles). [SFist, Eater, Grub Street]
TBD, the much anticipated, wood-fire-driven spinoff of AQ, is now set for an November 1 opening, two doors down from AQ on Mission near 7th. As we've discussed before, there will be a camping/campfire theme to the place, plaid thermoses and all, and chef Mark Liberman is doing a menu based around wood-grilled meat, fish, vegetables, etc. [7x7]
The team behind Super Duper, Starbelly, Beretta, and Pesce are going to be using the former Pesce space on Polk Street to test out their new concept, Uno Dos Tacos. It's slated to open for real in the former Seller's Market space in the FiDi, but in the meantime, they'll be opening it as a two- or three-month pop-up in Russian Hill/Polk Gulch. [Inside Scoop]
Another legendery S.F. spot, Stars, will be returning in spirit for one night only at Foreign Cinema on November 7. Chef Jeremiah Tower will be back for this command performance, and he'll be cooking alongside chefs Gayle Pirie, Emily Luchetti, Loretta Keller, Dominique Crenn, Wendy Bruker, and others in this benefit for the James Beard Foundation. And over in the Mission, the guys behind Local Mission Eatery and Local's Corner, who are also opening a Bi-Rite-esque grocery store soon, are also going to open Local Cellar, a shop selling only locally made beer and wine at the corner of 22nd and Florida. [Inside Scoop]
