Whispers of “nice stems” and “check out the trunk on that one” at one Bay Area fashion event taking place this weekend are likely to have nothing to do with willowy models coming down the runway.
That’s because Sunday’s Green Gala Garden Party takes place among the 12,000 plant species that make up the impressive University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley. A fundraiser to support the care and maintenance of the 34-acre garden and home to such famous residents as Trudy the Corpse Flower (who, coincidentally, is this week in the throws of blooming for the first time since 2005), the event features sustainable fashion from local designers Sasha Duerr, Mr. Larkin, Del Forte, Savannah Knoop, Ocelot, Heather Howard, Jonathan Baker, Skye Schuchman, Ashley Rose Helvey and The Moon.
“It’s a completely new event for us,” says Gala and Program Coordinator Deepa Natarajan.
Along with a fashion show set amid the towering residents of the Garden’s Redwood Grove Amphitheater, the event features organic edibles from Devoted Catering by Amiee Alan, Quivira Vineyards biodynamic wine, live music and a silent auction with items from such eco-friendly local businesses as Eco Citizen Boutique, La Note and Berkeley Bowl.
The Green Gala Garden Party takes place on Sunday, June 28 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $95 in advance and $115 at the door. To purchase, call 510-643-7265.
