The notorious San Francisco fog just got a little boozier thanks to Alameda-based distillery Hangar 1. Drought-savvy and innovative, Hangar 1's new Fog Point Vodka is the first ever vodka made with San Franciscan fog-caught water.
Hangar 1 head distiller Caley Shoemakeras, 29, partnered with local organization FogQuest to capture local fog and repurpose it as clean, pure water using man-made "fog collectors" from around the Bay Area.
Here's how it works: As the vaporous fog from the Pacific Ocean moves across the bay, it directly enters into a fog collector's netting. The water particles gather along the catcher's netting, collecting into droplets of water that gravity pulls into a liquid pool at the base of structure, and voilà—water. Not only does the process create water purer than bottled or tap, it also acts as an alternative water source in the midst of California's drought.
For the actual distilling process, Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Winery provided his best bottles of vino to use as the vodka distillate.
All profits from Hangar 1 Fog Point will be donated to the expansion of sustainable water applications, including the installation of more fog catchers around the Bay Area.
