Size isn't everything, and the High Sierra Music Festival can attest to that.

Sometimes referred to as "the greatest little festival, with the emphasis on little," the High Sierra Music Festival is returning for the 22nd straight summer to Quincy, about 90 minutes north of Truckee on Highway 89.

From July 5-8, the Plumas County Fairgrounds will take on its annual Woodstock meets Burning Man vibe, with nearly 60 bands covering just about every music genre taking the various stages over the four-day and night period.

This ain't no hippie festival. Headliners Ben Harper, STS9, Galactic, and Built to Spill lead the pack while acts as diverse as reggae superstars Toots & the Maytals and Matisyahu play alongside indie favorites Deer Tick and electronic project Big Gigantic. And that's just the tip of the iceberg of who will participate in what has been called "a musician's festival."

And in keeping with its "little" -- though not to be confused with "smalltime" -- appellation, the festival-going crowd generally ranges from 8,000 to 10,000 souls, keeping the claustrophobia content low and the grounds intimate. The camp sites, each with its own theme, are often adjacent to the stages, fostering a sense of community and engendering a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

There are a variety of ticket options, ranging from adult four-day ($199), three-day ($185) and two-day ($160) passes to adult single-day passes ($65 to $85, depending on day). Kids and teens ticket pricing is also available.
