‘Hopelessly Devoted’: Gimme That Sing-Along ‘Grease’
Grease is the word -- have you heard? And now its also a Rydell High-rockin’ sing-along, courtesy of SFFS Film in the Fog, which kicks off Saturday, Sept. 26 on the Presidio Main Post Theatre Lawn with Grease, that fun-loving paean to fifties nostalgia by way of the ‘70s.
Critics may have reviled the 1978 cinematic incarnation of the musical when it first came along -- ushering Olivia Newton-John (Olivia Neutron-Bomb, to those who mocked her soft-rock supremacy in the ‘70s) into movieland and consolidating John Travolta’s reign as the blue-eyed dancing king of the day, coming as it did on the heels of the deal-changing disco-smash Saturday Night Fever. But audiences flocked to the musical in droves, drawn by beauty-school dropouts, bad boys in black, sassy slapdowns of authority, and a love story that brought together ‘70s superstars with ‘50s pop idols like Frankies Valli and Avalon. They made it the second highest-grossing US movie of the year and sent the soundtrack LP to the top of the charts in numerous countries.
“Tell me more, tell me more”? Expect to bid a fog-laced farewell to “Summer Nights,” a group croon on “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and a euphoric “You’re the One That I Want” on the lawn of the Main Post Theatre as this subtitled version rolls. Free, family-friendly, picnic-perfect -- and expect comedy by PI: The Physical Comedy Troupe and gratis popcorn. So pull out the blankets and have a bottle of wine on the ready - all you need now is some deliciously cheesy-fun Grease.
Grease sing-along happens Saturday, Sept. 26, 5 p.m., at Presidio Main Post Theatre Lawn, 99 Moraga Ave., SF. Free. www.sffs.org/content.aspx?pageid=1245
