HOT. The word carries so many meanings: passionate, sizzling, trendy, intense, and yes, sexy. But for us, it signals our favorite month. Meet the 20 movers and shakers that have us fired up this year.
As anyone living in SF knows, our eating philosophy has shifted from whatever’s tasty to local is better. All good, except for one problem: Local distribution channels were shoddy.
Although within 50 miles of the city, hundreds of independent producers farm, ranch, ferment, bake, and jam, they’ve had few ways to efficiently get their delicious things to eaters. So tech entrepreneurs Alon Salant and Rob Spiro founded Good Eggs.
To outside appearances, the start-up is simply an online grocery service with a local-only funnel. You browse more than 200 vendors—selling produce, pantry items, dairy, bread, fish, and meat—click, and purchase. “If you place an order on Monday, on Tuesday morning, [the vegetables are] pulled from the ground. On Wednesday, they come to your door,” Spiro says.
Behind the scenes, though, the company’s tech team had to create the fulfillment and distribution tools that have producers receiving orders and then dropping them off at Good Eggs’ 10,000-square-foot Dogpatch food hub, to be sent out again within a day. Launched here in March, the service is expanding to New Orleans, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles this year—courtesy of two very good eggs.
