For our new column "Jams We Love," we're turning you onto the songs that keep us going every day. We'll showcase a new playlist every Monday so you can start the week off right.
1.Lana Del Rey, "Video Games"
A gloomy-day ode by New York singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey, who combines harps and pianos to shimmer underneath her sultry, 60s pop-star-gone-rogue vocals. Turn this on when curling up, reading books, and drinking coffee are the only things on your agenda.
2.Themays, "High Noon Walker"
Droning synths and swampy beats rule here, forming a kind of mellow, experimental hip-hop groove. SF beatmaking collective Themays, comprised of Exray's members Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp, released a mixtape in July that we can't get out of our heads.
3.Jay Reatard, "My Shadow"
In homage to the excellent, melancholy documentary "Better Than Something" about the late Memphis spitfire Jay Reatard, that played last week at the Roxie Theater, we're revisiting tracks from his immortal solo debut Blood Visions (he'd been in a million Memphis bands before striking out on his own). "My Shadow" is classic Jay: blistering, messy, and wrought with angst.
Ganglians - Jungle by Popfrenzy
4.Ganglians, "Jungle"
There was a wrinkle in time when this Sacramento band played all over the city, so when took over the Hemlock last night after a pretty long hiatus, we were reminded instantly of how much we missed them. Their latest album Still Living (Lefse) drops tomorrow. Give their borderline-insane psych pop a listen and get pumped.
I Love All The Girls by RSTVMO
5.R. Stevie Moore, "I Love All the Girls"
This underground music hero plays two rare shows at the Make-Out Room Aug. 28 and 29 (with Ariel Pink!) so get primed for his zany, lo-fi set with this tongue-in-cheek track about loving the ladies that could have been found on Paul McCartney's early solo albums.
