Listen Up - A Huge Week In Music: Birds & Batteries, Pixies, Tempo No Tempo and Many More
03 November 2009
From old nostalgic favorites to up-and-coming locals brandishing fresh material, and famous singers fronting other collectives, all we know is that by the end of this week our wallets will be drowning in emptiness and we'll need at least another week to recover. You know that old saying, "You can sleep when you're dead?" We'll be utilizing this theme to power through this thoroughly heargasmic week ahead of us.
Atlas Sound, Great American Music Hall, 11/3: For those experimental psych-rock enthusiasts out there, make sure to get to GAMH tonight to witness Bradford Cox's (of Deerhunter) solo project in action. How one can get even more experimental than Deerhunter is fascinating enough, seeing Bradford Cox alone getting all crazy on multiple instruments will blow your mind. Broadcast is opening, so this bill promises to be quite the night.
White Rabbits, Slim's, 11/4: I mean do we really need to tell you about White Rabbits? By now we're sure you're familiar with them, their catchy tunes, high power rhythms and relentless energy. If this isn't motivation enough, LA indie superstars, Local Natives are opening. They're blowing up on the underground circuit and they'll be touring with Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros later this month so go see them while you can.
Tempo No Tempo Album Release Show, Rickshaw Stop, 11/5: This is probably one of our favorite bills this week. Maybe we're a little biased because of the overwhelming amount of talent on this bill that reside in our great City, maybe we just can't help wanting to see Man/Miracle, Maus Haus and Tempo No Tempo all in one night. Celebrating their first full album release (finally!!), Berkeley locals, Tempo No Tempo are bringing some unique new material to the table that we are more than eager to hear. This will be the show to be at this week. We guarantee it.
Immortal Technique, Shattuck Down Low, 11/6: We can't forget about our hip-hop heads out there. Check out this native Peruvian, but NYC-based rapper best known for his grimy, blunt style of lyricism. His matter-of-fact, harsh perspective on life will surprise and inspire you in the most interesting of ways.
The Bravery, The Warfield, 11/6: An innocently amazing rock band from NY, it's really just like any other band story you might hear. The difference? These guys actually have their live performance down to a science. Their carefully calculated songs play out in musical perfection with just the right amount of theatrical pizzazz.
Gift Of Gab & Chali 2na, Independent, 11/7: This really is a win-win situation here. When you have Gift of Gab (Oakland native!) from Blackalicious co-headlining with Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, there's really no going wrong. These are 2 of the hardest working MCs in the business, and quite frankly, 2 of our favorites, without a doubt. We'll gladly support talented hard-working MCs any day of the week.
Vampire Weekend, Town Hall Theatre, 11/7: This small venue in Lafayette has been sold out for days, but if you have the patience for Craigslist, we highly recommend you get to searching. It will definitely be worth your time. If you're still not up on this amazing 4-piece, go to their website here and get a free download of their latest single "Horchata." Its boppy beat and ear-catching rhythm have us wondering what it's going to sound like in person. We bet it's gunna be good.
Birds & Batteries Album Release Show, Café Du Nord, 11/7: Featured last year in our Hot 20 Under 40, we knew this band had something big in store for them. Releasing their latest EP this week, we have a sneak preview of some tracks, some albums and tickets to this release show to give away. Stay tuned for more details.
Pixies perform Doolittle, The Fox, 11/8-10: This iconic band is playing one of their most iconic albums, Doolittle in its entirety. This is such a big deal, in fact, that they added an extra night. Three full nights with the Pixies? We can hardly wait. Check out more information on the shows here.
Raveonettes, Bimbo's, 11/9: What can we say? We love our Danes. This Danish rock duo carefully orchestrates harmonies laid in with some genuine noise rock and we can help but fall in love. Their spunk and unique character make them one of our must-sees this week.
