Blonde Redhead & Thee Oh Sees, The Independent, 7/14-15: With a semi-cult following, this Big Apple-based trio has been making waves in the underground indie scenes for years. They’ve had a somewhat tumultuous past with a rotating door of cast members, but the solid state they’re in now makes them an absolute must-see. Local favorites, Thee Oh Sees are set to open. Ps – both of the shows are sold out, so we wish you the best of luck scalping outside or hounding Craigslist sellers.
CB3 (With members of Brazilian Girls), Ashkenaz Music And Dance Community Center, 7/16: The Chris Berry Trio (which is actually a quartet) including String Cheese Incident’s Michael Kang is joining with the rhythm section of the Grammy-nominated Brazilian Girls at Ashkenaz tonight. If you’re into Afro-dub/reggae/jam band music, this event is for you.
Afrofunk Festival, The Independent, 7/17-18: Afrofunk/Afro-dub appears to be the theme of this week. Check out big hitters like Sila & The Afrofunk Experience, Vieux Farka Touré and local multi-genre 10-piece mega talents, Bayonics, at this 2-night festival.
Ozomatli, Montalvo Arts Center, 7/18: Hike out to Saratoga to see some Latin hip-hop funk that’s sure to be a party. Every single beat these guys make is danceable, and they can get a crowd of wheelchair-bound residents at an elderly home shaking their bums ‘til kingdom come. Just imagine what you’ll be like.
CéU, Herbst Theatre, 7/18:SFJAZZ is really reeling in some good acts this year, this one being a prime example. Brazilian super-dame, CèU is just a youngster at 29 from Sao Paulo with a sultry, temptress-like voice that crosses the lines of every playing field. Her entire show is a mesmerizing, incomprehensible piece of pure artwork.
