It’s obvious from the very short list of featured musicians this week, the land of music remains quiet as weary artists take a break from non-stop festivals and shows on their summer tour. We expect it to kick back up and into full force in late July, but for now, here are a few must-sees this week.
Deer Tick, The Independent, 7/1: This ever-evolving folk band from Providence, Rhode Island absolutely does not want you to add any sort of extremities to the sound of their band. As quoted from their website, “Deer Tick [has] been labeled things like alt-country, and freak folk, which the band finds a little weird. Are things like "alt" and "freak" necessary to describe Deer Tick? Deer Tick doesn't think so.” Nonetheless, classify what their music is for yourself and see what all the buzz is about at The Independent tomorrow night.
Ani Difranco, Mountain Winery, 7/1: A legend written into feminist history, this delicate personality puts everything on the table with her heart-wrenching lyrics and absolute certainty in performance. She’s released more than 20 albums; gone super green with her lifestyle, created Righteous Babe Records based out of New York and has even been called “fiercely independent” by none other than Rolling Stone. Definitely worth the short drive.
Fillmore Jazz Festival, Fillmore Street between Jackson & Eddy, 7/4-5: Celebrate the birth of our nation with something just as dear to our nation’s heart, jazz. Claiming to be the “largest free jazz festival on the West Coast,” expect to enjoy over 8 blocks of art, food, music, and drinks. What more could you ask for? Reverend Horton Heat, Great American Music Hall, 7/6-7: If nothing else, march yourself right over to the GAMH just to glimpse Jim Heath (aka The Rev) in his most erratic and shockingly outlandish form. This guy is a real performer, from head to toe, and let’s just say the music ain’t bad either.
