This week, some of the greatest popular rock songs the world has ever known will be played in the Bay Area. 

Tuesday: Savages at Great American Music Hall

Yo Mr. Punk Wannabee, please put Savages at the top of the bucket list. Forget YouTube, leave your phones in your pocket, and take in every second of this all-female British post-punk quartet. The band earned the praise of the entire internet a few years ago for their confrontational attitude and brilliant debut album Silence Yourself. At shows, Savages preaches authenticity and seeking out a righteous life without buffers or screens or b.s.. Or, as Pitchfork noted a few years back, “Savages’ music finds kinship with post-punk’s oppositional politics, thematic darkness, and anxiety about the dehumanizing effects of technology.” Familiarize yourself.

Tuesday: Miguel at Fox Theater

Miguel’s third full-length album represents his most confident work to date, and perhaps the album that finally establishes Miguel as a rightful torchbearer from the D’Angelos and Princes of R&B heritage. Wildheart is ripe with an ambitious, novel funk/soul marriage we rarely hear from today’s voices. It’s also one of the rare modern albums that manages eight or nine potential singles, yet somehow binds together on the incredible power of a desperately expressive voice. 

Wednesday: Six Organs of Admittance at the Chapel

Will there be a place in the coming world for experimental instrumental psychedelia? That’s not necessarily a question posed by Six Organs of Admittance’s Ben Chasney directly, but the age of endless emoting has forgotten most nonverbal music. And that’s a shame, because the transfixing beauty found in any sprawling Six Organs song is exactly what we need to combat our attention deficits.  

Wednesday: MSTRKFT at Mezzanine

In an interview with The Aquarian, MSTRKFT’s Jesse F. Keeler revealed what MSTRKFT fans have been waiting six years to hear: “Well, I’ve been working on a MSTRKRFT record for a long time, and it’ll hopefully be done soon.” Please please please MSTRKFT, PLEASE tease at least a few songs from the long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s Fist of God at the Mezz this week.

Saturday: Hall and Oates at the Greek Theater

The news that Daryl Hall and wife Amanda Aspinall are divorcing serves as unavoidable subtext to this show. I wouldn’t expect too many songs from the Hall’s 2011 solo album Laughing Down Crying, on which Aspinall sang back-up vocals. I would expect some of the greatest popular rock songs the world has ever known.
