Under-the-radar festival alert: you should absolutely consider the Huichica Festival in Sonoma for your upcoming weekend plans. The lineup is filled with all sorts of soon-to-be and already-prominent acts such as Sonny and the Sunsets, Fresh and Onlys, and Amen Dunes (more on them below). Plus wine. Duh.
Monday: Seinabo Sey at Great American Music Hall
If you happened upon Seinabo Sey last fall at The Chapel, you know this Swedish pop star has the chops for any kind of venue. Her vocal gymnastics skills are Olympic-level, if such an event existed (it should). Her 2014 debut album For Madeleine earned gold medals across the internet, and the YouTube video for her hit single “Younger” has been viewed nearly two million times, rightfully so.
Monday: Lupe Fiasco at The Regency Ballroom
Few artists take their cues from sources as diverse as Noam Chomsky, James Baldwin, Howard Zinn, and Malcolm X, but that’s why Bay Area hip hop icon Wasalu Muhammad’s work sounds consistently timeless. He also recognizes and shows appreciation for other artists who give life to ardent, purposeful narrative-focused storytelling.
Tuesday: Neon Trees at The Fillmore
Sometimes shameless pop songs succeed despite their shamelessness. An unabashed preference for simple, warm hooks has served Neon Trees well. The Utah-based, Mormon-identifying band finds itself on the road unexpectedly this summer — citing boredom in recent interviews. That’s pretty awesome.
Friday: Amen Dunes at The Chapel
Damon McMahon has been doing this for awhile now, but only recently has his star began to rise meteorically. His 2014 album Love stole the spotlight of the alt-folk rock universe last year, and now it’s time for a march across the country to remind fans of his remarkably heartfelt, poignant, harrowing, and beautiful songs. As mentioned above, Amen Dunes will also be at the deserving Huichica Festival in Sonoma this weekend.
Saturday: Lil Wayne at Oracle Arena
Lil Wayne in the building ya’ll! The universe-famous emcee and newest Tidal owner just dropped a new, exclusive track for the celebrity-musician label (Jay-Z, Jack White, and Kanye all count themselves as owners), called “Glory,” the first single from the imminent The Free Weezy Album. Listen here and get your tush to Oracle.
